The joke was that the Prussians used the term "Capitain" (Kapitän) for infantry captains during the Napoleonic Wars while the Austrians used Hauptmann; and "Premier-Lieutenant" instead of Oberleutnant; and "Seconde-Lieutenant" instead of Unterleutenant.

Check it out:
Exerzir-Reglement für die Infanterie der Königlich Preussischen Armee, 1812
Dienst-Reglement für die Kaiserliche Königliche Infanierie, 1807

Ah okay, I don't really know a lot about German/Austrian regiments in the rankings they use for different unit types.

a Captain merely leads a company a Colonel leads a regiment.

A captain can't lead a regiment thus Colonel is better for Regiments.

Recruit a company only if you want but most people seem to be taking whole regiments.

It lists Hauptmann as an alternative for some reason.

To my understanding, If playing as UK and going purely historical, Regimental Colonels would be a quite an scarcity. UK rank system was set to the regiments and their commissions.

During the time one regiment (since during Napoleonic wars 2nd Battalions were usually formed) could fight in two different continents. Colonels were usually generals and the leadership of the regiment usually fell for the Lieutenant Colonel.

I think it was common to see some captains instead of Colonel, depending on the size of it.
But for a gameplay accuracy, I would rather go for Captain (even if my regiment is one of the oldest), but that always depend on what you pretend, your roster and maybe your roleplay.

Atleast in the US Army, the structure is as such:

Regiment/Brigade: Colonel accompanied by a Command Sergeant Major
Battalion: LtCol, sometimes a Major accompanied by a Command Sergeant Major
Company: Captain sometimes a 1stLT accompanied by a First Sergeant
Platoon: Sergeant First Class
Squad: Staff Sergeant
Fireteam: Sergeant or a Corporal/Specialist.

Aren't Platoons commanded by a 1st Lieutenant?

SFC's usually serve as platoon sergeants, not platoon leaders.

I was beforehand digging this and found UK organization quite interesting to say at the least. Complied a basic list: Typical British Line infantry regiment with a single battalion had typically the following when speaking of officers:

1 Colonel (often not present as colonels were generals and were more of ceremonial heads, some exceptions still)

For the Battalion:

1 Lieutenant Colonel (often the leader of the regiment or the battalion, especially since regiments operated as single battalions with second as a reserve)
1 Major

Then each company, again usually, had:
1x Captain, 1x Lieutenant & 1 Ensign.

Also difference in flank companies often was that they didn't carry colors, thus Ensign was instead an additional Lieutenant. Based on what I was looking on at Loyalist muster rolls in 1779 they usually seemed to (atleast way back then) have 3 Serjeants and 3 Corporals. 2 Drummers was usual as well.

Found some interesting read on these:

7-years war:

About reforms during Napoleonic Wars which included more lieutenants and NCO's for larger companies, good sources:

About Continental Army, but still has British organization circa 1775.
