In-game names/tags
« on: July 03, 2017, 06:33:05 pm »
Well after having a lovely conversation with AGS | Refleax, he recommended that I make this thread to start a discussion around this topic and to see the popular opinion.

Currently, with NW, your in-game names/tags are not directly tied to your Steam name, meaning as an example; with NW, my in-game name could be 'Svea-Livgarde_Kpt_Carolus' while my steam name is simply 'Xaime'. With Holdfast at the moment, your in-game name is directly tied to your steam name, so as an obvious example; my steam name is 'Xaime' so my in-game name is 'Xaime'.

While yes this is simple, I personally don't like the idea of having your name tied to your steam name. The in-game names/tags you had for Warband regiments, in my opinion, made it "unique" and overall easier to organize and identify regiments/units when in-game. It also made it easy to know what rank members are, etc.

Of course, you could just easily change your steam name to accommodate this but again for me personally, I don't want to make my steam name 'Svea-Livgarde_Kpt_Carolus' just to keep and show the "uniqueness" of the tags.

Maybe I'm the only one with this opinion. I'm interested to see what your opinions are as I'm sure the developers are just as interested.

The chat logs for anyone that is interested;

Hmm. I'd have to see what a scoreboard looks like with the current system and how the tags look on that. On the plus side, this is good for keeping track of trolls. (Like he-who-shall-not-be-named for example, among others) However, on the bad side this could be a personal privacy issue, too. I know some people change names in-game and on Steam often just to maintain this privacy if they wish to be left alone on Steam due to multiple reasons.

A just-NW-community conundrum indeed. Can we live without underscored tags? Upon reviewing videos AGS had the recent system display as Group | Name

So where do regimental ranks fit in with this tagging system?

You're free to "tag" your regiment however you wish. You can still use underscores.

It's not limited in any way.

I saw one example of an underscored name in the schooner video, but presumed that was an older state of the naming system. Thanks for the clarification. So would you be able to name your character with underscores and putting any rank in the full name? Or are ranks handled differently?

Ranks aren't handled differently. For example, I can simply change my Steam name to "AGS_RGL_Refleax"  and I will see that name being reflected in the game.

Once again, we're very open to changing the system so that it's not tied to your Steam name depending on the feedback we receive from our community.

I'm hoping to have the ability to create a character like Arma 3 and Warband, if we can more connect everything to that character it would be better. If you right click the name on scoreboard, perhaps it links to steam as shown in Day of Infamy.

I'd like to see the removal of underscores from tags, they were ugly xD

Again, thanks for the clarification on ranks and naming. As for the 'tied to Steam ID' bit, I'm undecided about that. I wouldn't want anything to possibly delay the early access release without a very good reason.

I've already heard that bans might be linked to your Steam GUID so why shouldn't it be possible to choose your name freely?
As long as admins can see a GUID tied to all earlier names to easily spot earlier rulebreakers.

Hey! Thank you very much for the feedback guys. You're now able to input a separate display name of your choosing from within the game.
