I understand the game has a little cartoony feel but blood and gore would suit the game well as long as you can make it fit into your art style! I'd definitely be keen on some blood and gore xD

If dismememberment is a bit too much, light sprays of blood with uniforms getting bloody or dirty would be enough.

Bonus points if there was a generic mangled soldier body model for those directly hit my roundshot though. It could be done though as I've seen sailors being torn apart by cannon fire in the Blackwake game that also uses the same engine.
