Title: Emote / Animation Menu
Post by: Luke192 on September 24, 2017, 06:16:46 am
I think it would be amazing if we could have an emote / animation menu that works similar to the music and phrase menus. Whether it be for formal events, realism, etc, it could add so much to the immersion of the game. To the devs, if you are watching this, please keep in mind that for these to be most effective, they would need to be able to be used while walking/marching.

Some possible emotes could be:
Present the colors

Hands behind back / Rest

Sword salute

Raise colors

P.S. I noticed that the flag bearers have the flagholster for where the flag would be inserted (for marching by my understanding) yet it is not used. Here is a picture of Holdfast vs. real life flag bearers.

I think the animation we have in the game now would be good for running with the flag, but it should be in the holder while marching.

Wave flag

Rest

That's all I have for now! Please reply with any of your ideas (with examples if possible) and hopefully this feature can be added in the furture.

I think some other animations/positions as you said are welcome to the game.

What you are basically asking for is the ability to do Drill in game, which I think would be great! but the downside is that most nations had different drill. Personally I would more like to see things that could actually be useful in battle such as right dress (maybe you press a button and your character auto lines up with the person to your right with the correct spacing) and being able to press a button and sink footsteps with either the person in front of you or a drum beat. Either way I agree that Drill in game would be awesome but it is also quite low on the priority list.

That's a really good idea as well. I don't necessarily think anything specific to each nation would be necessary as that would take a lot of work. However, present arms, the sword salute, how the flags can be held seem to be similar in most countries. However, in regards to your idea of right dress and getting in step, I absolutely love it. Would work great with realistic linebattles, sieges, etc. Maybe the two could be implemented together :)

Yeah I agree with that. Could be good for standing at attention

Soldiers should be at order arms if they're "standing at attention", not holding their musket at the slope.

Lol, damn that looks gay, first thing that came to my mind was, «the village people» anno 1810 :P

Anyway, i would also like too see emotes, i prefer they had keybindings instead of putting them like in clickable box as with prases,,, e.g press f1 to salute, press f2 too etc...

I think that could work. Would be a lot of key binds to remember. Maybe Having 3 or 4 of the emotes have bindings by default, preferably the more commonly used ones, and have the rest in a clickable menu. Then maybe the option to bind the rest of the emotes to other keys.

Yes something like that:). Reason I dont want them to put it in menu is becauese that would be very clunky, clicking the menu button and then look for that salute emote browsing through hundreds of unimportant ones. I would love too keymap just a few common ones. I never use the phrases box, because of this, there is just to much in there to make it effective, lets say I want to say, "fire", before I find that command we are all dead, so I just yell "fire" in the microhpone, a lot quicker.

Yeah I gotcha. it'd be nice to still have a menu so there can be a bunch of different ones but, like you said, have 4~ available to map to a key

In so far as "attention" follows "at ease", which is only given when the men are at the order; no.

I know you do not go to 'at ease' when at the shoulder. But a shoulder arms was considered attention as well.

When working an Officer would say the soldiers are nicely at attention.

If something such as this is eventually added, players should be able to cycle through movement and idle animations, either through a keybind that cycles through or a selection menu. I'd personally like to trail my arms as a light infantryman.  :)

I think, that something that was used in Battlefield 2 could be implemented with succes, as a voice or emote menu.

And with such menu, you could chose which commands you have in it. For example, you dont need "Abandon Ship" at the land battle.

And of course +1 for emotes, and +1 for sync marching etc.

There currently is a voice menu accessible by default "b," if you didn't already know. But if you are saying this in regard to organizing the voices, I'm all for it. :)

Its mainly just an idea for RP. Not necessarily a particular command. Just a resting position :P :)

as long as they are historical and authentic, and also the leg turning animation seriously needs to be implemented. as a third person player primarily, it's incredibly jarring to see the legs just stay stationary while you turn your character, like he's hovering on air. sure there's inverse kinematics for feet placement on terrain, but the legs themselves must move if you turn around. just look at yourself make a 180 turn in the mirror. your legs move.

i think the radial menu is a meme and a bad system. having a number menu is much faster. plus you could remember combinations. say, the menu is accessed by pressing v key or whatever. then there's a list of numbers, so you use the wave signal a lot. you remember it is the 5 key in the menu. in the future, you press v and then 5 quickly for wave. no nonsense requiring you to play with your mouse on a radial menu where you have to read the words and distract you from the battlefield you are vewing

Number menu is ok in my opinion. Tbh i never had any problem with radial menu. After couple of hours you get used to it(where is what command), but yes, numerical menu would be probably better, but in my opinion, only if it will be customizable. IMHO it was always pain to use numericals that had "tree" structure. But maybe it will be time to get used to it :D
Anyway, what we have currently is disaster if it comes to quick commands.

Yeah I agree that the numerical menu should be customizable or have a favorites section possibly. I'm sure if it was customizable they would allow you to assign certain keys to specific commands/emotes.

I don't think bumping threads is a problem, because there is really only one thread or each suggestion. Not to mention that the forums don't have a tonne of people on them so some threads that get lost aren't posted on, even if they're relevant.

Very good ideas, all of them although the flagbearer flagholster is by far my favourite!
Good job suggesting these, the AGS-Team will most definetly use these as examples
for when they introduce emotes to the game.
