Well that's true. I just hope no feinting, chambering etc. Just stabs thrusts and blocks.

Hold on a minute guys.

If we change melee to something incredibly simple but incredibly risky, like in Red orchestra 2 and Rising storm. People would choose to not get into melee due to the massive risk involved of getting your stab in before the enemy.

This, in turn would make a culture of people wanting to get out of the way of an organised bayonet charge, making the manouvre far better at taking ground and hopefully, more realistic.

I'd like to see a system that creates an environment in which only the most disciplined units are willing to stand and take a bayonet charge without falling back.

They should hold their ground under the knowledge they'll mostly be wiped out when the line of steel strikes them. Otherwise everyone will end up standing their ground.

That shouldn't be forced upon the player. If a commander and his men are being charged they should have the option to stand or retreat, just based upon what unit they're shouldn't make them automatically stand their ground or retreat.

Should've put "if they choose to." That's what I meant, there should be a far greater risk involved in bayonet on bayonet engagement than standing in opposing lines and running a musket jackpot.

If a unit is capable of effectively standing their ground through discipline and teamwork, they should be able to. One side or the other should break on contact, but it should not be the defender by default.

Edit: I feel I should clarify; by "break" I mean take enough casualties in wounded and slain that they must either disengage or face the possibility of being wiped out.

Under the pretense of if they choose too that would be very interesting to see how it would play it similarly to what regiments do in normal LB's on the current NW. If a regiment is charging another some regiments will clash while others will just run away.

I know alot of people who would be very disappointed to find a "dumbed down" melee system.

simple to learn yet extremely hard to master was the pattern that made it good.
