I thought I should drop my opinion as well, why not?
For many years i have baffled with the question of ranks. How many, how high?
For the past five years, I have experience from leading NW regiments/groups of various sizes, from almost obsolete companies of ten men to a 50+ attendance regiment.
The name of the officer doesn't mean much. It depends on how complex you want your OWN regiment/clan system to be and of course how many people attend events with you.
Generally though, it's a lot easier for small groups <12 per event to have less high ranked officers; usually it makes things weird. But then again, no matter how you name the rank, Captain, Major or Colonel,
it is de facto
the same thing, the leader of that particular group. The name of the rank is just for aesthetics, and whether you are fully interested in role-playing or not.
Hope I was helpful, see you around
