IIIe Corps d'Armée Français

Le IIIe Corps

The ground was covered with snow and the air was heavy with mist. Out of that immaculate white, one could only see honor, glory and courage. These three virtues represented by three colors: Blue, White, and Red. They flapped in the wind, these three colors holding ornamental golden letters in their center which spelled, IIIe Corps. To the right, musket steady, the 57e of infantry stood, to the left, hoisted on their mounts, the 5e of hussar. Behind them, the French Army, before them, a plateau and a village: Pratzen, Austerlitz.
While the rest of the army would climb up the mount, the IIIe Corps would hold fast, luring the coalition into attacking them. One against eight, footmen and hussars should hold against the odds: this was the cost of victory.

The captains gave their orders, the lieutenants repeated them to the sound of fifes and trumpets. Then silence came. And at last they were in sight: twin two-headed eagles, holding in their claws a globe and a scepter: Austria and Russia, their main forces, artillery and heavy cavalry.  Seeing the isolated Corps, they rushed toward it,  the Austrian to its right and the Russian to its left, answering this, a roar rang out: Vive le IIIe Corps! Vive la France!
The assault was furious. The Austrian ran into the 57e's line. The french regiment fired so many salvos the enemy appeared on the verge of breaking ranks, but number surpassed fear, and ceaselessly, they walked on. “Fix bayonets!” The brave footmen faced the enemy, men scattered in a shapeless melee. Austrian blood tainted the snow, and the 57e held still. And they came from behind, saber in hand, the 5e! They sliced through the mass, straight on their steady horses. The Austrian broke and fled, but the exhausted and weakened French then saw the Russian coming. The two captains consulted each other: they had to do something.
As they turned, they told their men “To us, soldiers! Footmen and horsemen! The IIIe Corps needs you! Honor, glory and courage are about to break, join our ranks, save our flag, for France! With fire and steel, walk with the 57e! With swords and stallions, charge with the 5e! Veterans or rookies, we are waiting for you, ready to form. Join us on the battlefield, to glory, and to victory!
