Title: Auto Reload or Skill Based Reload Mechanic that enables fast reload for those ca
Post by: Destraex on September 15, 2017, 01:36:13 pm
Auto Reload or Skill Based Reload Mechanic that enables fast reload for those capable and trained?

That is the worry with Napoleonic games. Making it exciting to be part of a line unit. In practice it would have been exciting. I think the key is to make the reload part a game mechanic that can be screwed up if you are not concentrating. That would make X amount of round a minute possible. Rather than an auto reload. That is the exciting part. Seeing if you can get rounds off before becoming DEAD.

P.S. Now that cavalry are announced I am looking forward to getting the game. :)

So like a manual reload that you have to time? That sounds pretty cool

Maybe this kind of reload mechanic where you can press R again in the right moment to reload faster.

Exactly what came to mind when i read the first post - would definitely make Line Infantry that bit more interesting/intense!

Yeah the Gears Of War timing mechanic would work great.

I don't mind the idea of a timing mechanism. Maybe make it a two tiered system? Press R to reload, when it's in the first green window hit R again to reload slightly faster, or wait until the very end of the green window and try to hit a very small window to get a significantly faster reload? Miss time it and it makes it a much slower reload. Make it an every reload thing so that screwing up your last reload doesn't automatically make your next one slow, and visa vera. If you don't try to hit the window, you don't receive either a speed up or a slower reload, the musket / cannon - whatever reloads at the standard pace.

Reloading both Muskets and Cannons was a learned and practiced skill during the Napoleonic Wars. This could be somewhat historically accurate, by making the more veteran players a little more proficient than someone just starting the game, but not including a built in stat that gives vets an unfair edge. Good ideas all!

If the green window would be on the end of the reloading it wouldn't be useful, If we want the 2nd window, it could be at the beginning of the reloading cycle and it should be much smaller than the later one due to balance.

There is a precident for faster firing using a 'tap-load' --where instead of the ramrod to seat the ball to charge, the musket-butt is struck on the ground to force the ball down the barrel.

The downside to a tap-load is a poorly seated charge, resulting in a fouled barrel & a weak charge.
..., but in a pinch.

Russian soldiers, too, were so charged in critical situations.

Here is what Popadichev remembered about this:

By the way, all the muskets of the 18th and 19th centuries had a conical seed hole, so they did not need to pour powder on the shelf.

Possible to make a poll on the ideas suggested?
