Title: Reenactment Regiments (NW)
Post by: Wolfster on January 21, 2017, 11:23:38 pm
I'm curious to know who here reenacts for a regiment, and if so, what regiment they reenact for... I personally, follow the 44th 'East Essex' Regiment of Foot, which is mostly based South-East of England, and am looking to becoming a full-time member shortly.

Sounds interesting, I know in my town they've done reenactments before but yeah! I find them pretty cool!

110th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment (American Civil War)
Les Conscrits de Davout (85ème Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne) (Napoleonic Wars)
85ème Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne 1915-16 (First World War)

All founded these groups myself with a bunch of guys. Happy to accept any new members if anyone is interested. We have full loaner gear and weapons for several people and a lot of events this year. Just contact me if you are interested.

Pictures from last year:

So, since the reenactment season is pretty much over for this year (I am not going to Austerlitz), here are some pictures from some of this years events in order.

1st Drill event in January, with our old equipment...
[close]

Another Drill event in Gravelines, it was the worst shit ever, not ever going there again... But hey, first time we used our new habit-veste, trousers and proper shako covers
[close]

Civil War event in Walldürn in early spring. Great weather and great event. Excuse our Paki gear tho.. Were getting it changed.
[close]

Verdun. Wow. It was so crap. We left after 10 hours. Apparently we weren't allowed to make a fire (EVEN THOUGH THEY ASKED US HOW MUCH FIREWOOD WE NEED WTF?), so we couldn't cook any food for our self... We made a fire anyway and a french dude showed up and started insulting us and demanded to take the fire down... Then it started raining all night, I woke up with a 2cm deep puddle on my blanket... We left shortly afterwards, not to spoil all the food we brought that we now could not eat.
[close]

Bourtange. It was a one day event for us, because we had to attend a Wedding on Saturday... Still was fun
[close]

Medingschanze. WW1 event in Germany. It was super fun and we had a small skirmish with the numerically superior Germans. 50 vs 4 is not fair!
[close]

Minden. Pretty boring event, we mostly sat around and played games...
[close]

Next up is Wavre. I guess it was an okay event, Wavre never is really great, but its not super shit either, so we had some fun. The field was super muddy and our shoes got stuck in the mud, so we decided to go barefoot.
[close]

Civil War Event in Venlo/Limburg. It was really fun. We had the ability to dig and construct our own trench, which was super great, we set up camp in the woods behind it, overall we had a very good time.
[close]

Neuf Brisach. Was alright, the best thing was the Drill with the 22e Demi Brigade.
[close]

Kasteel Rozendaal (Or something like that) A one day event, with a small skirmish.
[close]

Torgau. WW1 Event. It was weirdly organized, but the location was great. We had a small skirmish which was fun.
[close]

Jena. A really great event, probably one of the best this year. On saturday we grouped up with the 22e and moved out to find some Saxons that were apparently hiding in Cospeda. We did not find them, but had a great time nonetheless. Because we moved out so early, we had to wait 4 hours for the remaining French troops to arrive, which we used wisely by drinking beer and eating bread, sausages and bacon. For some reason our battalion commander decided to split us up, and we were put into the voltigeur company, while the 22e was in the first line company. Moving as voltigeurs with this kind of drill was our first time, but it was fun.
[close]

Last event this year, Archeon. We only took part on Sunday, it was quite fun, the battle was kinda stupid, but hey, we got to shoot guns, do some drill and hunt chicken, so what else do you want!

Well that really is no problem if you want to take part.
I got enough loaner gear to equip you completely. So if you are interested, just write me in Steam.

Check this calendar for the the events this year.

No, but contact a Unit in your area. Usually most units have loaner gear they lend out to new members. No one expect anyone to buy all gear from the first day.

Implying you need to be smuggled to get into Europe.

Just hop on a plane to north Africa, then have a cruise in the Mediterranean in a rubber dinghy.

My job is particular, I can't attend what I want, that really depends on season, time, weather (to get out of the docks) and the traffic.
Dunkirk is like the 3rd largest port of France and everything pass near it, because of it's proximity with England/Netherlands and the Baltics, that make it important.

1st of July there is Wavre, which is in Belgium, which would be pretty convenient for you, I guess. Its not the greatest event ever, but it is close by so we always attend it.

There is also more stuff in August, september and octobre, really all year around But for December/Jan. So should be possible to figure something out.

I am not entirely sure, I hardly know all of the groups, But I am guessing that the 8eme and maybe also the 9eme are some of the largest groups.

Imperial guard is reenacted by dozens of groups world wide (If you can count Imperial Guard as one group anyway). So theoretically there should be the most reenactors doing the imperial guard.
I think world-wide the 21e is one of the most reenacted regiments, I believe there is a group in the UK, 2 in the US, 1 in Australia, 1 in Russia.
I am guessing that the 95th Rifles are also very well reenacted, with groups world wide, I know at least of 3 groups.

But then again the 85eme also has 3 Groups... UK, NL and my own, which is European/German.

There are also at least two 18e, one in Poland/Czech Republic and one in France.

Problem with the French regiments is, that they are not strictly Line Infantry or Grenadiers or Light Infantry. Each regiment is made out of 3 parts. Fusilier, Grenadier and Voltigeur. So you naturally end up with one group reenacting the Voltigeurs and another group the Grenadiers (As is the case with the 18e, for example)

Title: Re: Reenactment Regiments (NW)
Post by: Cara on January 24, 2017, 03:31:33 pm
Yeah these shared names are pretty confusing sometimes !

As for the 18e, there is even another serious one made from ex-18e, to make more living-history events (you know them probably as Conscrits du Languedoc Olafson :) ).
The good thing these years is that there is a strong wish to unite groups on the battlefield, in order to have some real scale companies (as we did in waterloo), with a voltigeurs sections etc. So even if you are in a little Line Infantry group, you will have the chance to mix up and train with plenty other groups from different countries. And you can (and it's historical) follow your group as straight infantry most of the time and when it's necessary, become a voltigeur. For my part, it is what I do, i'm in the 18e (a line inf group) but when there is an occasion, I switch to the voltigeur's section "le peloton uni de voltigeurs".

Kinda. We are actually focusing on pre-Bardin, but still have one or two Bardin coats and shako plates.

Please don't. They are horrible reenactors. Also they are not very active on the continent.

Looks good. Also the equipment do you have to buy it yourself and do you need some license for these old guns?
Title: Re: Reenactment Regiments (NW)
Post by: Olafson on January 25, 2017, 01:00:17 pm
Depends on the group and on the country you live in, really.

For example, we in my group lend everything, including gun, until the new member has the money to purchase his own gear.

Post by: DΛRKWΛVΣ on January 25, 2017, 01:06:35 pm
Alright,  that is nice.

Can you tell something about the price of the equipment. Doesnt have to be correct.
Title: Re: Reenactment Regiments (NW)
Post by: Cara on January 25, 2017, 01:20:12 pm
Same for us for newcomers, especially young ones (without a proper job). Basic stuff you need to buy at the beginning is some shirts and shoes for example. I won't give you an exact "price" for the equipement considering it depends. It depends if you buy it through a mutual order in your group, if you know a good tailor, if you buy it from a retired reenactor...

If you insist, in euros, you can count around 900e for a decent musket (very important to not buy some pakistani shit which will blow at your face) and often 400e for an habit-veste (this http://i20.servimg.com/u/f20/11/08/03/09/06-51411.jpg)

But as Olafson said, don't think at the prices, if you have the motivation, enlist in a serious group and they are used to beginners, they will lend you everything and each year you will buy a new item ;) Even some groups propose a 0% loan, so you will have your equipement and will pay 50e/month for 20 year :p

Post by: DΛRKWΛVΣ on January 25, 2017, 01:23:00 pm
Hmm that's less than I expected. Thanks. :D.

And yeah I'll never buy from these pakis or those sort of shops. I'm gonna search up some reenacting videos. :P
Title: Re: Reenactment Regiments (NW)
Post by: Olafson on January 25, 2017, 02:17:32 pm
If you start like I do (which I do not recommend) and start buying crappy stuff first, either because you don't know better or because you want to be cheap, you will eventually pay much more than that.

But I do not count anyway, because I bought enough gear for 6-7 guys from my own money, just so I can provide loaner gear to other people...

There is other ways to get to Europe. Jump onto a cargo ship.
Can we just appreciate this quote for a second?

On topic, We've got a local group of civil war reenactors that were talking about taking a trip to Europe and join up with some NW reenactors for some big event.

Yeah the 1812 group in america is Pretty small(Cause everyone and their Grandma is doing Civil war) But the 1812 is alot more fun and rewarding cause most of the skirmishes would be natives fighting some militia and it would be less then a hundred people fighting so its pretty cool.

What about independence war? Is there a lot of groups reenacting this period? I suppose a major part of people who are doing the 1812 war is also doing the independence war, but I don't know.

Anyway, I'm from Switzerland, and serve in the 3e Régiment Suisse, Compagnie de Voltigeurs (3rd Swiss Regiment, Voltigeurs Company). We're around 15 in our group so I don't know if other people than French know us x)

Gotta love those guys.

I know in Leipzig I saw a group of Swedish guys, all armed with percussion weapons.
For some reason the organizer was fine with it, even tho in the rules it was clearly stated that percussion weapons are not allowed.

I don't even know where they store their percussion caps when doing this. It is not like you have a 2nd cap box or anything.

Bullshit.
Misfires do not happen THAT often. And if they do, the audience is usually amazed too.

+Percussion weapons are boring. You lose the kick of having a huge explosion literally 2cm away from your face. Or getting sparks in the back of your neck from all the other dudes firing around you.
Or burn wounds on your hands and stuff. Exchanging a flint in the middle of the battle, cleaning your gun in the middle of the battle. You lose all that when using percussion. Pretty boring.

Most percussion weapons are also smaller and have a smaller caliber. Really boring, if you ask me.

Of course in Europe you won't get the chance to be involved in a African reenactments. I think that stems from political correctness. Many black Europeans participate in European based reenactments. Yet, Europeans don't in African ones? I don't understand why Europeans only participate in white reenactments?

There is great history in Africa, China etc.

No, the reason I do stuff I am interested in, is because I am interested in it. Not because I am Nationalist. I even reenact the French, yet I am German.

Very different cultures, (For example, anything that is not European) are just not interesting to me. Sure, you can define that as some kind of Nationalism, I guess, but really it is not. It is where I grew up, so I am obviously more related and interested in it.
I don't care a crap about my ancestors either. For all I care, they could have been from China, I still would not be the slightest more interested in Chinese culture.

You wouldn't enjoy it.
In Napoleonics I complain 24/7 about how useless most other units are and in WW1 I always get picked as honour guard. Which makes no sense, given that my uniform is dirty and I am not dressed for it at all.
We usually ignore parade stuff, all our gear is 100% campaign, so I do not understand why they pick me all the time.
