Title: Ship discussion
Post by: Harris1815 on January 23, 2017, 04:41:12 pm
Hello All, This is the first post about Ships and I Enjoy the Age of sail and I would hope the ship mechanics and good.

But we can Discuss anything in here like how will you choose the ship or will it spawn on the map like in NW or will you deploy on it or move out in a shipyard. There are some many ways the devs can take this it would be amazing.

The good old Harris from the Sharpe series. It looks like we have a common interest there.

We'll be going into more detail on the ship mechanics that are already in and what we have planned for the game in our developer blogs.

In terms of the Naval section of the game will we get to see a nice variety of well known British and French Rates?

Would be cool to see such ships as the Victory, L'OCean, Surprise etc ingame.

Perhaps having each Rate require more men by comparison and maybe the largest of battles is between 2 1st rates for example.

Be interesting to know what plans you have for combating naval combat!

Thanks for the response Refleax. I was Just thinking about Blackwake and if that might deter some people from Holdfast:NaW but this seems to be on a much larger scale.

Etherton I like your thinking would be awesome to have like the HMS Victory with like 100-200 crewman and have a boarding battle against the French.

Currently only seen small single deckers in the trailers so here's hoping for some bigger double deckers or even pushing it for triple!

An idea could be a gamemode within the Naval section similar to that of Battlefield 2142. A titan mode if you will, could have 4 frigates per team and also a 1st rate ship of the line for each team as its 'titan' or 'Flagship' to be more in tune. That ship would be the enemy teams target to destroy. Either by Destroying the Flagship or boarding and capturing it perhaps by raising your colours your team wins the game. May require a sizeable amount of players but that depends on the games desired size, could use a 2nd/3rd maybe even a 4th rate as the flagship and maybe even drop down to 6th rates as the main team size

Haven't you ever heard of the Battle of the River Severn? What a bloody battle it was. River boats on each side rowing.

Didn't do much else really.

Now that im thinking of Gun boats, could the Dev team make small boats with 3 pound cannons a thing like in NW?

I'm personally looking forward more to the sloops-of-war than frigates or ships of the line. Ships we could reasonably crew fully to their historical complement.

That would be really Cool you would only need maybe 45-70 on this baby since this is on the Wiki page.

This is my favorite ship. Santisima Trinidad. Biggest ship afloat in 1790s and first ship of the line.

Couldnt find good pictures on Google. But this should be it.

Do you mean 1st rate ship of the line? since she isnt first ship of the line. Also, another nit pick, she wasnt the largest ship afloat in 1790. She did have the most guns at 138 guns but the biggest ship, if my history is correct, was the newly built(at the time) commerce de mersaille of the Ocean class ship of the line.

Yeah I meant that.  :)

And yeah could be that French one but this ship was the biggest of one year in the 1790s I don't know the exact year anymore but I have read it somewhere.

Most guns yes, honestly, she might have been the been the biggest when she was built in 1769, but i believe the french got similarly sized ships around the same time as well. Not to discredit her impressive arnament though, but she was a floating brick as well simply due to her imense weight and not really being designed for her armament(she was designed as a 112 gun 1st rate Ship of the Line.

Not really, considering a 4th rate is max about 60 guns, that would still be doable in game deending on player numbers, but a 100 gun Ship of the line i think will get a bit much

I recall one of the Devs saying at the ships themselves take up a large amount of server space as moving entities. As a result I'd be over the moon with the largest ship being a Sixth-rate. If not maybe a Sloop-of-War.

I agree with you 6th rates would suffice as the strain on server resources would be intense.

Adding on to what some people said about boarding ships, I think that the mechanic that Blackwake has would work very well in this game. What happens is when you grapple an enemy, unless they remove the grapple, you have to kill everyone on board to capture the ship. Of course with this game being on a much grander scale you could adopt that mechanic BUT instead of the ship sinking like in Blackwake, your crew could commandeer the ship and maybe even use it against the enemy. There could also be a gamemode where one team is in little rowboats, going to try to capture a previously captured ship.

Looks like a dead post, but Im wondering if we will be able to work the guns by ourselves like in NW or if it will be a bit more realistic and need a few people to run out swab out and all that stuff, because if it's the latter then we can go ahead and not even think about 4th rates and up lol. The idea of smaller ships being worked well (multiple players per gun) is more appealing to me personally, better teamwork is rewarded by getting the guns loaded and run out faster, than the kinda vanilla single person loading and running out a massive piece of iron. Just my 2 cents. Also a climbing mechanic seems like a must for ships, where we can actually "grab" onto ladders and ropes.
Title: Re: Ship discussion
Post by: Garrel on August 22, 2017, 06:40:55 pm
I think it could possibly be 2-3 men per cannon. Also, it would be nice to see people climbing as you've quite perfectly stated out.

It would be a lot more efficient and enjoyable to have the freedom to see people climbing up the rope on the side of the ship to get to the nest or one/group of the marines climb up to the mast and then when in range, start firing at the enemy ship-crew.

Yeah, I just know how horrible it is trying to get up the ratlines in Blackwake lol. You fall at least half the time. How the devs deal with falling deaths and damage will be interesting to see.

Kind of sad how the shipyard section has been dead since November. Although I am probably more of a landlubber I still love the potential the naval aspect of this game has. Blowing up an entire broadside of the opposing ship, then seeing its mast collapse into the water is extremely satisfying. It's such a shame that the "crews" part of the community is so small. Nevertheless, I'm sure we'll be pleasantly surprised in the future! Hold Fast!

I'm sure there will be people out there which could take on the names such as "HMS Victory" for example.

Would love to see the crew side of Holdfast gain more and more! :)
