Title: Posts for Ranks?
Post by: Connzcdf on January 20, 2017, 02:42:14 am
Heya, just a thought regards the posting for ranks system. Surely this only encourages spam? I understand in your thread you say 'We trust that the beloved members of our community will only post when it matters!' but a system based off time/rating posts would mean people;
a) Will probably spend longer looking at the forums and keeping up to date.
b) Encourage more meaningful content within certain boards.
Just two points I thought of. Keep up the good work!  ;)

yeah but then again there are people on FSE that just auto refresh so either system can be abused

True. It would probably be better if it was based on time looking at the forum. System could still be abused though as it was mentioned earlier.

Auto refreshers are a marvelous thing to people who abuse

Or make people go higher in ranks per month. No abuse possible :)

Yes, although a timed-based system could be abused through auto-refreshers; to be honest I'd rather have people auto-refresh, rather than tonnes and tonnes of useless posts, or posts just for the hell of it.

That's right, but I'm pretty sure it'd be better than being drowned under a massive amount of meaningless posts.
That said, you could tell me FSE used it and it didn't help them, I'd answer with how bad would it have been if their system was based on posts.

It's a forum, it's used to talk and give his opinion on something, or just having fun.
And you are all complaining because of useless posts that gives points ?

Well, you just play for the competition of having points in that case, if you were a bit more mature than this
you would not care about this system, and just use a forum as it should be used.

Don't complain about short useless or private joke post, we need everything to do a great forum.

But of course yes, an hour system is better, I saw this on a forum, even more like a 30min than a 1h would be such perfect

What we don't want is people cluttering up the forums with useless points just to get a higher rank.

I really don't like the ranks being based on post count. Ranks based on time spent on the forum is a much better system.

Quality over quantity, I say. Rewarding people with a higher rank on the forums for spending more time on it is better than giving it based on post count in my opinion.

It's still better than having the same 5 people spam on every thread waiting for their next rank.

Well I try to wrote a lot on the forum on interesting subject (such as classes, possibilites, suggestions, my native french language part etc...)
a timer system wouldn't be worste for me, as I pass my day connected on it.

I can see what people are saying with "It's not my time they are wasting" with the useless shit spam posts but it kinda is. I would say I have wasted a fair bit of time on threads trying to find the page with relevant information or discussions on because of people wanting a badge ( we all know who you are  >:( )

What about a system where other posters can give u points for a good post, thats relevant etc

And the rank is based off points.

That encourages good posters, and ppl who abuse the system can get banned.

:)

I run an SMF forum as well, same software as this. What you're asking for isn't supported by the software and could cost upwards of around 60$ for a mod even. There is however a 'karma' feature, this can be activated in the main portal settings which gives the ability for everyone to give others a Like or Down vote for reputation type of system, similar to reddit.

To my knowledge, this can't be linked unless a modification for the forum software is created.

But then again, That's why you have the "Report" button & Moderator's, to stop things such as spam. I know this would then increase the amount of situations which Moderators would have to deal with, but by having it as Amount of time viewing, it still doesn't stop the spam as people like to have a lot of posts. :D
