Title: rip Steam Greenlight
Post by: Midnight on February 14, 2017, 03:33:36 pm
News Thread (RockPaperShotgun.com) (https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/02/10/valve-to-abolish-steam-greenlight-open-up-with-steam-direct/)

tl;dr - Steam is throwing away the Greenlight System for Smaller Game Developers and implementing a new system which entails a fee of 5,000 USD.

"The next step in these improvements is to establish a new direct sign-up system for developers to put their games on Steam. This new path, which we’re calling “Steam Direct,” is targeted for Spring 2017 and will replace Steam Greenlight." - Steam Announcement (http://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/558846854614253751)

“While we have invested heavily in our content pipeline and personalized store, we’re still debating the publishing fee for Steam Direct. We talked to several developers and studios about an appropriate fee, and they gave us a range of responses from as low as $100 to as high as $5,000. There are pros and cons at either end of the spectrum, so we’d like to gather more feedback before settling on a number.”

Not sure what this will mean for current Games Greenlit such as Holdfast. I hope by Holdfast already being Greenlit some time ago, it will not be affected by this new system which I believe is highly stupid. "Of 5,245 games released on Steam in 2016 around 1,700 made over $15,000 - enough to recoup 5,000 fee." - Steam Spy

This is absolutely ridiculous, Has steam not taken enough money from its players already?

Hopefully it'll be like paid mods. Games on Steam should be about quality, not the developers' wallets. More quality control by valve would be good enough, but I guess that it doesn't make them money.

I'm glad Holdfast: NaW got through the Greenlight process, just in time, with this turn of events.

Rival, Jim Sterling is a disgusting person. I didn't know lard could be so pretentious and revolting until i saw that guy and dug a little deeper. He's an actual cuck.

On the matter at hand however, it's a poor decision yet again much like the paid mods.

Good and bad sides to this, it stops all the shitty drag-and-drop asset games made in Unity from being put on Steam, but also severely limits indie developers who may have put a lot of time into a game but can't afford the fee. Not that bad if the cost is based on the game, rather than a flat 5,000 fee.

The cost is $100 USD.

if this is the actual price then that is pretty acceptable since most of the shitty "game devs" (unity engine games that can be made in 5 mins if you literally follow the tutorials) and it isn't a huge financial sacrifice.
