Did you ever hear the tragedy of the Trebuchet, the Siege Weapon?
I thought not. It's not a story a catapult would tell you. It's a siege legend. The trebuchet was a long range engine of siege, so powerful and so accurate, it could use centrifugal force to launch a 90kg projectile over 300 meters. It had such a knowledge of physics, it could even successfully launch a stone at a mobile target. The use of a counterweight is a pathway many engineers consider to be unnatural. It became so powerful, the only thing the engineers feared was losing this power, which eventually, of course, they did. Unfortunately, they taught the catapult builders everything they knew, then the catapults besieged their workshop.
Ironic. It could launch projectiles at long range targets, but not at short.
