Does anyone have a degree in History? Or perhaps studying for one?
This seems like the kind of game that would attract historians.
I thought it would be interesting to have a thread to allow people to discuss their interests in academic history - perhaps there are even people who specifically study Napoleonic era history.
What is the focus of your degree, what do you like about it and how do you find it different from amateur history that you may have pursued as a hobby?
Yes, I have a bachelors in History. My focus was on Spain's conquest of the Americas. The difference was using scholarly sources to produce a thesis, etc. My thesis was based on the psychological aspect of the conquest rather than that attributed to " guns, germs, and steel" and how it differed from conquests by other European nations.
I enjoyed pushing myself to see history from different aspects as they say that only the winners write history. I read several Aztec and Mayan journals and accounts of the conquest as well as several of the conquistadors' accounts. I enjoyed reading Christopher Columbus' journals as well.
Its crazy what you find out by doing more thorough research , rather than what we are taught in highschool. History is a funny thing and influences every aspect of our llives today. I love it.
