[POLL] Discord vs TeamSpeak 3
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:56:27 am »
Being a predominantly TS3 based community simply due to the fact it was around before Discord and everyone loves the functionality.

However, as a community we must adapt to meet the needs of new players. It's simply easier and much more used compared to TS3.

What do you lads think?

Discord is for Normies.
P.s though all jokes aside teamspeaks lay out is hard at first but as soon as you understand the method in place it is very easy to get used to. discord is kind of all over the place and the noises are annoying as well. like when someone joins the channel is just beeps.

Teamspeak is best if you're planning on using voice while playing games, especially if it's organised (like a line battle for example). Discord is more casual and better for typing and memes. I use Discord more now since I hardly play organised events anymore.

I personally like using teamspeak as it is more convenient and easier to use in my Opinion,
Less technical easier to understand / get the hang of.
Would always pick Teamspeak over Discord.

Discord is strange, it's off-putting in a way that is difficult to describe. It just seems more childish and silly whereas teamspeak is professional.

And from limited experience in actually doing gaming events with it, there was nothing like priority speaker for commanders or even a rank system so that commanders were at the top of the channel.

Teamspeak is just better overall; You can organize groups and channels, you can connect to multiple servers as well, keep a contacts list, and do everything Discord does to some sort of extent. Discord just seems like a program for people who don't need any organization or permission based things, like a group of friends just hanging out.

The looks of Teamspeak and the scripts are both very outdated in my opinion, considering Teamspeak servers are just as dedicated as Discord servers but still misses a lot of basic stuff Discord offers.
Some of the things missing from Teamspeak and what Discord has to offer are separate text and voice channels, meaning you don't have to switch voice channel to switch text channel, you don't even have to be in a voice channel 24/7. Secondly, chat is saved in a similar way as in Skype, meaning its not only available to you if you've been inside that channel nor online, but its always available, for everyone. Discord also takes advantage of address links and the web browser, meaning you can click an invite link and get on the server without even having to download the program. Contacts are possible to keep outside of servers just like in Teamspeak, meaning you can call and chat with someone privately outside of any servers.

Sure, Teamspeak has soundboard integration, priority speaker and really specific perms for usergroups unlike discord, but otherwise it has the same functions as Discord.
Discord has for long been aiming to be a combination of Skype and Teamspeak and they are about to succeed with their continuous godspeed updates. Discord bots are basically the compensation for the Teamspeak addons, without them its a sh*tstorm in both programs. We've probably all seen the Teamspeak servers and Discord servers which add 100s of addons and bots, and those servers which doesn't add anything and whose owners has no knowledge how to make usergroups and give out correct perms, both are bad examples.

But as people has said earlier, Teamspeak is still better for regimental purposes as of today, but as a server admin for a M&B:NW server, I've come to realize that discord is a very good addition to keeping in contact to players and admins outside of the game with the ability to alert, announce, chat and discuss without having to bring everyone together in a voice channel at a certain hour of the day.

Feel free to drop by the NWRP discord to see how we manage it. It has 180+ members in total with 60 players usually online at the same time during the day and its not a shitstorm.  ;)
But of course the regiment itself, 59th still uses Teamspeak.

There's no question, teamspeak is better. It has a better use for regiments, you're able to make rank server groups, and assign them accordingly. Easy to operate, great functionality.

Teamspeak loyalist filth.

My personal opinion is that Teamspeak is better for smaller groups; a single regiment or perhaps a group of friends. For small-scale stuff (or focused things such as a group of known friends playing a game or something) teamspeak can be great.

Discord, however, is by far the better community program. It's far more accessible and even the most gormless computer babby can use the browser version.
Discord is extremely easy to use and set up, and while I personally do prefer the UI of it I think it's a much simpler and easy to use interface if we're talking about a community here.

Our server of NW has had a teamspeak hosted by the Regiment who own us (The 59th Regiment of Foot) but in all honesty, nobody other than 59th users/good friends of those people were ever, ever, ever in it.
We recently made and promoted a discord which now boasts 100+ members and is often used for idle chatter or to quickly contact staff; we also intend to integrate it into public events to provide a temporary channel for any up and coming newbie regiments.

Discord can also be good for regiments, with an incredibly easy to use rank system which displays visual cues to signify a players rank in the discord. The main downside of discord for me is that their aren't a bunch of cool little icons for tags on display.
That said, with various scripts and whatnot (such as our own redbot) you can add all kinds of scripts for on-command music, trivia etc etc

Both of them have their pros and cons but I reckon that if you're building a community, discord is absolutely the way to go.

We're only using Discord for group chat. It's a really great way for us to get to know our community better and gather feedback! Feel free to join us on there for a chat.
